We at Chhaya are saddened by the tragic loss of life last night due to flooding and the lives lost in the tragic fire on September 1, 2021. New Yorkers have long lived in basement apartments and they will continue to do so. The city needs to make them safe.
For over a decade, Chhaya has been fighting for safe, legal basement apartments in NYC. We want to ensure that New Yorkers have options for safe, affordable basement apartments outside of flood zones. Climate change guarantees that this is our new normal.
We MUST prepare. We need our city to address this issue once and for all and make basement apartments safe and legal NOW!
