Chhaya works to protect and preserve affordable housing for South Asian, Indo-Caribbean, and other immigrant communities across New York City. Through direct services, community organizing, and policy advocacy, we help residents secure safe, stable, and affordable homes.
As a HUD-certified housing counseling agency, we provide education and personalized support to first-time homebuyers and homeowners facing financial hardship. Our services help families navigate the complexities of homeownership, prevent foreclosure, and access available housing resources.
We also work alongside tenants to challenge unsafe housing conditions, confront landlord harassment, and fight displacement. From establishing New York City’s first Bangladeshi Tenant Union to organizing across Queens, we help residents build collective power and advocate for stronger housing protections.

Buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions a family can make. We offer homebuyer education, individual counseling, and guidance on mortgages, budgeting, and available down payment and closing cost assistance programs. Our goal is to help prospective buyers navigate the process with confidence.
Homeowners facing financial hardship shouldn’t have to navigate it alone. Our HUD-certified counselors provide confidential guidance on mortgage difficulties, foreclosure prevention, loan modifications, and available assistance programs. We help homeowners explore their options and work toward long-term housing stability.
We help tenants understand their rights and address issues such as landlord harassment, unsafe living conditions, discrimination, and eviction threats. Through counseling, tenant associations, leadership development, and grassroots organizing, we empower residents to advocate for themselves and their neighbors.
