Public Banks for the Public Good

Invest in a just economy and divest from banks that harm New Yorkers, our communities, and our planet.

Chhaya is part of the Public Bank NYC Coalition, and we believe that public money should work for the public good, not private gain. The public banking movement is growing in New York and throughout the country. We urge state legislators to take action to usher in socially and environmentally responsible public banks from New York City to Rochester, and beyond.

Public Banks are created by government entitiessuch as a city or county—and accountable to the people. Through public banks, local governments can partner with community development lenders to invest in affordable housing, small and worker-owned businesses, renewable energy, and more, and to expand safe and affordable financial services in historically redlined communities—advancing racial justice and neighborhood equity.
