Special Initiatives Manager (Full-Time)

About the Position:

Chhaya seeks an energetic and dynamic Special Initiatives Manager to lead the organization’s efforts to be responsive to community needs during the COVID-19 Pandemic Recovery period. The Manager will handle a broad and diverse range of responsibilities and assignments to support emerging and temporary programs. 


The Manager will primarily focus on planning and implementing special programs and initiatives. This includes related recruitment/hiring, onboarding and training in program delivery, and program management functions such as tracking deliverables and some light reporting.  As such initiatives include successfully serving hard-to-reach communities such as seniors, undocumented immigrants, limited English proficient New Yorkers and other vulnerable populations, the Manager will be responsible for planning and conducting outreach to those communities. 

In addition, as Chhaya pursues funding for additional recovery programs, the Special Initiatives Manager will help evaluate funding opportunities and support the funding application process. This work drafting budgets, projecting reasonable deliverables, and drafting project plans, all in partnership with the Director of Programs. 

This position will report to the Director of Programs.

About Chhaya:

Chhaya is the only South Asian and Indo-Caribbean Community Development Corporation (CDC) in the nation. Our mission is to build community power, housing stability, and economic well-being of the South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities in New York. Since our founding in 2000, Chhaya has helped prevent hundreds of foreclosures; assisted first-time homebuyers in obtaining thousands of dollars in down-payment assistance, led the basement legalization campaign in New York City, provided individuals with key immigration services to better navigate daily life, empowered families with financial management tools and skills, and fostered the civic engagement of thousands of South Asian and Indo-Caribbean New Yorkers. As a leader in New York City’s housing and economic justice sector, Chhaya is poised for significant organizational growth and development. Our main office is in Jackson Heights and we have a second location in Richmond Hill – two neighborhoods with vibrant South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan and conduct outreach to hard-to-reach populations as described above;
  • Build and maintain a pipeline of candidates for frontline staff positions for special initiatives;
  • Effectively manage new direct service initiatives and programs from start to finish in pursuit of Chhaya’s goals;
  • Supervise frontline staff for program, as well as any volunteers, fellows, or interns;
  • Lead discussions with management team to evaluate funding opportunities for special initiatives;
  • Collaborate with the development team and senior leadership to support the creation and submission of grant proposals;
  • Assist in the internal and external communication plan for the organization ensuring that program success are highlighted effectively and in a timely manner;
  • Other tasks as assigned.

As a member of the Chhaya staff, additional responsibilities may be added related to special events, critical initiatives, and other special cases that require full staff participation (some evening sand weekends). Further, as a manager within the organization, The Special Initiatives Manager is expected to lead by example and help build a culture of ownership, accountability, fairness, inclusiveness, and fun.

  • Deep commitment and passion for social justice, and grounded by connection to the needs and issues facing low-income South Asian and Indo-Caribbean New Yorkers
  • Experience in direct service and/or community engagement
  • Knowledge of, and familiarity with, South Asian and Indo-Caribbean immigrant communities in NYC
  • Strong experience delivering social services, including direct outreach, case management, asset building, housing counseling, or other relevant services
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, and provide timely and clear updates to supervisors and direct reports
  • Experience in creating, implementing, and overseeing complex initiatives with multiple partners
  • Ability to work in an organized, efficient manner with a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Ability to independently complete tasks and project with tight deadlines
  • An ability to be flexible and willingness to wear “multiple hats” if and when needed
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, meeting facilitation, and writing skills
  • Integrity, compassion, and principled leadership
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work some weekends and evenings, if needed
  • Fluency in South Asian languages or Caribbean English Creole preferred
Salary Range:

$50,000 – $65,000
