Jagpreet Singh joined Chhaya CDC as a Community Organizer in October 2015. As a Community Organizer, Jagpreet works with Chhaya’s tenants through group workshops, individual counseling, building-wide organizations, and city-wide campaigns.
Jagpreet is a graduate from Rutgers University where studied Political Science, History, and South Asian Studies. He has worked as an organizer for the New Jersey United Students and Rutgers Student Union, as a field manager for the NJ United for Marriage, as a co-director for the New Brunswick Renters Union. He is currently the co-director at the Jakara Movement NY, a progressive Sikh organization that works to empower Sikh youths and communities, and regularly volunteers with the East Coast Solidarity Summer program, a weekend-long leadership and youth empowerment program for 15-21 years olds of South Asian origin.
As a life-long tenant and the son of immigrants, he’s longed to help others overcome similar obstacles shared in his family history including tenant harassment, unwarranted evictions, and the lack of in-language services that would otherwise prevent South Asians from falling through the cracks. Jagpreet is a native from Brooklyn and a long-term resident of New Jersey. He is fluent in Punjabi and understands Hindi and Urdu.
