Neighborhood Planning and Development
Chhaya’s Neighborhood Planning and Development Program works with New York City’s South Asian communities to identify shared needs and issues. Following our needs assessment conducted in 2010, we found that the city’s South Asians lack shared community gathering spaces devoted to civic engagement and arts and culture that embrace the diversity of South Asians. There is also a shortage of city-administered programs that address the needs of the South Asian population, especially in regards to the diverse languages, religions, and cultures present in the community. Many stay-at-home women and the elderly who have limited English skills face isolation. Chhaya works with community members and leaders and partner organizations on initiatives and events to address these growing needs.
