Pragati Overview Pragati is a free program to empower South Asian and Indo-Caribbean cis-women, trans-women, and non- binary individuals who have had trouble finding jobs that empower them. Over a six-week period, Chhaya CDC will provide participants with all of the skills they need to be IRS-certified tax preparers. Fifteen participants who successfully complete the course will be offered employment at Chhaya in our VITA Tax Prep program in 2020. We will provide training on the following topics: 

  • Program overview 
  • Basics of computer and office systems 
  • Advanced-level training on tax preparation through a curriculum provided by the IRS 
  • Hands-on skills training on how to use specific tax filing software, such as TaxSlayer 
  • Basic tax law, including filing status, exemptions/dependents, income, dedications & tax credits 
  • Basics of case management & client relations 
  • Basics of other Chhaya programs and identifying referrals 

Participant Requirements Pragati is open to all cis-women, trans-women, and non-binary individuals who are looking to begin a career. Whether you are looking to enter the workforce, or looking to change jobs and pursue new opportunities, Pragati can help. Participants must be be fluent in English and authorized to work in the United States and have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent. Special consideration will be given to those with exposure and competency with Indo-Caribbean communities and also those who speak languages spoken by our South Asian tax clients (Bangla, Punjabi, Nepali, and Tibetan). 

Employment at Chhaya Fifteen participants who successfully complete the Pragati program—including the IRS certification exam—will be employed by Chhaya as Tax Prepares for its 2020 VITA Tax Prep program. Tax Preparers will earn a rate of $20 per hour. 

Program Schedule Beginning the week of November 11, 2019; Pragati participants will meet twice per week for six weeks. Participants are required to attend all sessions to successfully complete the program. We value flexibility so times and dates will be announced close to launch to allow us to find times and days that will work for our participants and instructors.
